United Utilities picks Farrans for Barrow sewer outfall

Farrans has won a £6m contract to build a new tidal pumping station and outfall pipeline in Barrow-in-Furness for United Utilities.

The new sewer outfall will extend 1400 metres across an inter-tidal area.  The mudflats are subject to several special designations including a Special Area of Conservation (SAC), Special Protection Area (SPA) and a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and a Ramsar (wading birds) protected site.

Geotechnics has carried out site survey work for the project, using its hybrid Hagglund cable percussion rig to sink 16 boreholes over the length of the pipeline route to depths varying between 7m and 12m below ground level.
