Wates to build MTC aerospace research centre

Wates Construction has won a £9m contract to build an aerospace research building for the Manufacturing Technology Centre (MTC) in Coventry.

Chancellor George Osborne announced £30m of government funding for the Manufacturing Technology Centre on a visit to its Ansty Park base in Coventry last month. This will be matched by £30m of private sector funding from partners such as GKN Aerospace, Airbus and Rolls Royce.

The new aerospace research facility will help companies develop new materials such as lightweight carbon fibre for use in aircraft and engines.

Buckingham Group Contracting is already on site preparing infrastructure works and is expected to complete a new spine road this month.

The MTC opened in 2011 – built by Morgan Sindall – and was founded by the University of Birmingham, Loughborough University, the University of Nottingham and TWI Ltd. MTC’s industrial members include some of the UK’s major global manufacturers and innovative SMEs.

The MTC aims to provide a competitive environment to bridge the gap between university-based research and the development of innovative manufacturing solutions, in line with the Government’s manufacturing strategy. The MTC is part the High Value Manufacturing Catapult, supported by the Technology Strategy Board (TSB).

There are also plans for a  £36m Elite Training Centre to be built alongside the MTC building.
