Contractor sought for £70m Halifax refurb

Calderdale Borough Council advertising a £70m contract to overhaul its offices in Halifax.

The council has submitted a planning application for to refurbish Princess Buildings, opposite Halifax Town Hall. This is part of the council’s plan to modernise and make better use of offices in Halifax town centre, with the aim of saving £7.6m over coming years by consolidating on three refurbished buildings.

The completed Halifax Customer First Facility was opened in November 2013 and the refurbishment of Westgate House is nearing completion, on schedule to be completed and re-occupied by council staff in April 2014.

The next phase of the scheme involves refurbishment of the Grade II listed Princess Buildings, which will be given a completely redesigned interior.

The existing site consists of three linked listed buildings with a 1960s extension to one of them. Work comprises demolition of 1960s office and the rebuilding of a new office on this side.

The rear of the property will be demolished and rebuilt to form a new central core. Internal remodelling and refurbishment will create a more open plan, modern office environment.

According to the published contract notice, the council hopes to start construction in September and complete by December next year.
