Long-standing plans for construction of a £400m holiday park on the site of an old Derbyshire coal field have moved a step closer to reality with a new partnership deal.
The Peak Resorts tourism development will be built on a reclaimed open cast mining site in Chesterfield. Developer Rupert Carr has been working up plans for years. The scheme was approved in principal by the local council in 1989 and gained planning approval seven years ago.
Mr Carr’s Birchall Properties has now struck a deal with the Grand Heritage Hotel Group, a US company that has agreed to invest in the project.
Centrepiece of the development is set to be a large dome to put the resort under cover. There are plans for 600 holiday apartments, hotel and hostel units with 250 woodland lodges. Outdoor sport and leisure facilities include a golf course.
The project team includes structural engineer Buro Happold and architect Stanton Williams.
The developer’s publicist was unable to offer any information about when construction might start, how much funding the Americans were putting in, what ownership stake Grand Heritage was taking or even if enough money was in place yet to enable the project to start.
