Crossrail has been given two new packages of funding that will ensure step-free access for all stations on the network and provide safer surroundings for stations in outer London.
All of the stations on the Crossrail project will now be ‘step free’, using £14m of investment announced by transport minister Baroness Kramer yesterday. The government’s investment at Langley, Taplow and Iver stations is intended to make it easier for passengers to access Crossrail trains when they start running from these stations in 2019. The package builds on a Transport for London (TfL) announcement last month that it would fund step-free access at Seven Kings, Maryland, Manor Park and Hanwell stations. Now each of the 40 Crossrail stations will be ‘step free’.
This week, London’s mayor Boris Johnson has also awarded outer London boroughs more than £28m in order for them to transform the public spaces around Crossrail stations. The TfL funding will support local borough-led projects at 17 stations. Improvements will include creating safe walking and cycling routes and facilities, developing seamless interchanges with bus networks and taxis, making improvements to the public realm and streets and boosting lighting.
